AFRICA | A brilliant Lady bags Political science degree with honors, wins full masters scholarship to US university
An exceptional young scholar named Kayla Willis has graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Spanish from Fisk University, United States.
Her academic excellence has also secured her a fully funded Master’s scholarship at the prestigious Columbia University.
Kayla shared her journey on LinkedIn, describing her four years at Fisk University as a period of intense hard work, bittersweet moments, and personal growth. She reflected on the significance of this milestone, stating, “Four years of hard work for this very special, bittersweet moment.”

Kayla first gained national recognition in 2019 when she made headlines for earning $1.5 million in scholarships to 35 out of 40 universities she applied to.
She ultimately chose Fisk University, where she excelled both academically and in extracurricular pursuits. Graduating magna cum laude (with great distinction), Kayla achieved remarkable milestones that highlight her dedication and leadership skills.
At Fisk University, Kayla was a Presidential Scholar and a W. E. B. DuBois Honors Scholar, a member of multiple honors societies, including Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Honor Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society.
Her leadership roles included Founder and President of “Going Against the Grain: Fisk Chapter, and president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated: Pi Chapter.
University Chapel Assistant and University Senate Secretary.
She was also Communications Director for the Political Science Club and Sophomore Class Senator, Junior Class VP, and Senior Class Representative for the 2023 Class Cabinet.
Kayla’s achievements earned her several awards, including The 2022 AT&T Rising Future-Maker Award and the 2021 Powerhouse Award Honoree and Keynote Speaker for the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year 2021 event.
She will be attending Columbia University as an HBCU Fellow, fully funded, where she will pursue a Master’s degree in Political Analytics. Notably, she is the first Fellow to represent Columbia’s Political Analytics program.
Expressing her gratitude, Kayla thanked Fisk University for shaping her academically and personally. She is excited to continue her journey at Columbia and aims to make an even greater impact in the field of political science.
