A young lady named Aminata Jaiteh has achieved remarkable success by becoming the first-ever university graduate in her family. She also earned the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in the United Kingdom.
Aminata graduated from the University of The Gambia with a bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, earning Magna Cum Laude honors.
Now, she is proceeding to the University of Sussex, where she will study for a Master’s in Gender and Development Studies on a fully funded Chevening Scholarship.
Celebrating her achievement on LinkedIn, Aminata shared her excitement about fulfilling her dream of studying in the UK. She reflected on her journey, describing how she grew up in a cultural setting that often limited opportunities for girls.

Despite societal expectations, she defied the odds and dared to dream big. Aminata overcame her background marked by poverty, social injustice, and economic dependence to fulfill her dream.
She currently serves as a global leader inspiring girls to dream and assert their rights. Aminata’s passion for gender equality and women’s empowerment was fueled by her work with The Girls’ Agenda, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the rights of women and girls.
Through this work, she became determined to pursue a postgraduate degree that would enable her to make an even greater impact.
Aminata’s Chevening journey reaffirmed that regardless of challenges, commitment, courage, discipline, and self-challenge lead to success.
The journey involved late nights at the office editing essays and mock interviews, as well as overcoming internet connectivity issues while working in rural communities to complete her application.
Aminata expressed her gratitude to Chevening Awards, the UK in Gambia group, the British Embassy in Banjul, and the University of Sussex for giving her this life-changing opportunity.
She also thanked her mentors and lecturers whose support and recommendations played a crucial role in her success.
Encouraging young girls to dream beyond societal limitations, Aminata shared an inspiring message: “Keep dreaming, keep chasing those dreams. Be bold, be heard, and change the world for the better.”
