AMERICA | Brilliant Lady emerges school’s valedictorian with 4.87GPA, wins full scholarship to Harvard University.
A brilliant young lady named Silvana Vasquez has beaten her classmates to emerge as the valedictorian of San Gorgonio High School in the United States with an impressive 4.87 grade point average.
She stated that she applied to 41 schools in total—including prestigious institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, and University of California Los Angeles but chose Harvard University because it has been her dream school for seven years.
“I at first though it was such a long shot, but the first one for me was Harvard. That has been my dream school for seven years since fifth grade I just knew I had to put that on the top of my list,” Silvana said.

Growing up in an underserved community where few students get accepted to top-tier universities, Silvana’s journey is especially inspiring.
She recalled how she struggled in her early education, particularly in fifth grade, when she failed to pass her state exams in both math and English.
But over time, she developed a passion for learning, inspired by her parents’ constant encouragement and hard work.
Silvana will be the first in her family to attend college, and her achievement has brought immense pride to her parents, who always supported her academic aspirations. “They always told me it doesn’t matter where you go, we’ll always be proud of wherever you go as long as we see you thrive in education,” she said.
She believes one of the driving forces behind her acceptance into Harvard, was her commitment to serving her community. In her application essays, she expressed her desire to represent and uplift the impoverished communities of San Bernardino.
Silvana also mentioned that one of the challenges she faced during her high school years, included distractions from social media and the pressure to compare herself to others.
“One thing that helped me stay focused is knowing if I feel confident in what I’m doing, and I feel like I’ll make my parents proud that was motivation enough for me, as well as discipline. Because there were those days when I didn’t want to do anything, and I had to tell myself this is for my future,” she said.
Looking ahead, Silvana plans to study law at Harvard to eventually enter politics. Her ambition is driven by a desire to advocate for communities like the one she grew up in.
“We see a lot of what’s going on here in San Bernardino as well, and so being a politician for me is being able to advocate for impoverished communities, especially where I grew up,” she said.
