A brilliant Nigerian lady named Joanna Abodurin has achieved remarkable academic success after earning a Master’s degree in Law and Finance from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
Her achievement was made possible through the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, a fully funded and highly competitive program that supports outstanding African students to pursue postgraduate studies at leading global universities.
Joanna’s academic journey is one defined by excellence, consistency, and record-breaking milestones.
Joanna's Story and How She Did It
She began her higher education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria, in 2015, where she enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree program.
Throughout her time at the university, Joanna distinguished herself not only academically but also through leadership, service, and extracurricular involvement. In 2021, she graduated with First Class Honours, achieving the highest CGPA ever recorded in the Faculty of Law since its establishment in 1962.
She also emerged as the Best Graduating Student of the Faculty. She became the first female to graduate with a First Class from the Faculty of Law, ABU Zaria, a historic milestone she described as nothing short of God’s grace.

As required for law graduates in Nigeria, Joanna proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where she once again demonstrated exceptional brilliance. In 2022, she graduated with a First Class, earning the prestigious Director-General’s Prize, one of the highest recognitions at the Law School.
Her excellence continued on the global stage. In 2024, Joanna won the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, and in 2025, she commenced her postgraduate studies at Oxford.
She has now successfully completed her program, graduating with an MSc in Law and Finance. Remarkably, she was also awarded the Faculty of Law Prize for the Best Performance in Corporate Finance Law.
Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Joanna reflected on her journey by posting a photo of herself from 2015 alongside her present self, noting how far she had come in just ten years.
She wrote that the girl she was back then did not have all the answers, but she had faith in God, a vision, and determination.
She described the journey as demanding, filled with long nights, early mornings, moments of self-doubt, and intense academic pressure, but credited her success to God’s grace, resilience, and the support of the people around her.
Joanna expressed deep gratitude to the Mastercard Foundation, Africa Oxford Initiative, Christ Church, Oxford, her family, mentors, friends, and colleagues for their unwavering support throughout her journey.
