AFRICA | A determined young mother named Latifat Ajao-Gbadamosi has achieved a major personal and academic milestone, returning to school after abandoning her studies due to pregnancy and eventually earning a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
Her story is one of resilience, motherhood, and refusing to let life’s responsibilities permanently silence personal dreams.
Latifat's Story and How She Did It
Latifat’s love for communication and broadcasting began early. As a child, she admired television presenters and dreamed of appearing on screen someday.
She recalls mimicking popular news personalities and pretending to be a newscaster whenever no one was watching. Her passion for speaking and media presentation was already evident even as a young student.
”When I was in JSS1 in FGGC now FGC NewBussa in the year 2000 I became a celebrity because of my command of words as I recited a poem on the Assembly Ground in front of hundreds of students and staff, I still remember the title of the poem ‘Always say the truth’ written by my Literary and debating society Master,” she recalled.
That moment earned her recognition and confirmed her natural gift for communication.

Determined to pursue her dream, Latifat studied Mass Communication, first earning a Diploma, before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication in 2016 with a second class upper grade.
The next logical step was a Master’s degree. But life soon introduced unexpected changes. In 2019, Latifat gained admission into the University of Lagos for her Master’s program. However, she soon became heavily pregnant with her first child.
With classes scheduled in the evenings, returning home late became risky and exhausting. Eventually, her husband advised that she suspend the program for her safety.
The suspension, meant to be temporary, stretched longer than expected. Two years later, she attempted to resume, but family responsibilities again stood in the way. She put the dream aside and focused on motherhood and supporting her family.
Still determined, Latifat later enrolled in an online Master’s program through Unicaf, which offered admission into Liverpool John Moores University with an 80% scholarship.
Although excited, the remaining tuition cost, nearly £2,000, proved difficult to sustain while managing family responsibilities. She eventually had to stop the program.
Latifat stated that the setback was painful, but she refused to completely give up. In 2024, Latifat reached a point where she felt unfulfilled and knew something had to change.
She realized she missed learning and being in an academic environment, wanted more than routine survival and business activities. So, she decided once again to return to school, this time determined to finish what she started.
However, balancing motherhood, business, and academics was challenging, but her determination was stronger. And finally, in 2026, her long-awaited dream came true.
She successfully earned her Master of Science degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos.
Today, she proudly describes herself as a wife, mother of three, communications expert, businesswoman, visual director, and social media manager, proof that women can pursue personal growth while raising families.
Latifat encourages others, especially women and mothers, not to abandon their dreams permanently. According to her, life may delay plans, but persistence eventually brings fulfillment.
