AMERICA | 26-year-old man defeats homelessness to earn bachelors degree at US university, wins full scholarship for masters.
A 26-year-old man from Richmond, Virginia named Kyle Jacobs has overcome tremendous challenges, including homelessness, foster care, and abuse, to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture with honors from Virginia State University in 2022.
Despite his hardships, Kyle’s perseverance has not only led him to academic success but also secured him a full scholarship to Columbia University, where he pursued a Master’s degree in Sustainability Management.
Kyle’s journey was far from easy. Throughout his youth, he moved between foster care, juvenile detention, and abusive environments.

By the time he graduated high school, he had already faced more adversity than most. In 2015, he began his college journey at Virginia State University (VSU), but after a year, he transferred to a larger university, where he experienced homelessness, living in an abandoned house for over a year due to a lack of student housing.
In 2020, Kyle reapplied to VSU and was readmitted, determined to complete his degree. By the time he graduated in 2022 as one of 527 graduates, he was a member of the Honors College and had a remarkable story of resilience to tell.
Kyle’s academic and professional achievements are just as impressive as his personal journey. He has completed internships and fellowships with renowned companies like Google, Capital One, Microsoft, and IBM.
Through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, he has won over $50,000 in scholarships and business competitions. He has also studied Business Ethics and Leadership in Brazil, is a member of multiple national and international honor societies, and was a scholar in the Introduction to Diversity in Doctoral Education program at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 2023, Kyle completed his Master’s degree at Columbia University as part of its Professional Studies HBCU Fellows Program. He then continued his academic journey, earning a second Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University in August 2024.
Reflecting on his journey, Kyle credits his resilience, hard work, and the opportunities provided by supportive organizations for his success. ”This journey has been incredible, and I’m grateful for all the support along the way. Here’s to new beginnings and endless possibilities,” he said.
