AFRICA | Seventeen years after his mother earned her nursing degree from Baptist Health Sciences University, Anthony Guinn walked across the same stage to receive his own Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, continuing a beautiful family legacy of care, compassion, and perseverance.
Anthony Story and How He Did It
For Anthony, this milestone was more than an academic achievement — it was a heartfelt tribute to the woman who inspired it all. His mother, who graduated from the same university in 2007, had spent years caring for others as a nurse while nurturing her son’s dreams.
“My mom graduated as a nurse from the same college in 2007, and years later, I got to follow in her footsteps—with her by my side every step of the way,” Anthony shared on Instagram.
The journey to that moment, however, was very challenging. Anthony opened up about the struggles he faced, from academic setbacks to personal challenges, that tested his determination.
But through it all, his mother’s encouragement, along with the support of family, friends, and mentors, kept him going.
He recounted how some friends offered him a place to stay, food, and moral support during difficult times. Their kindness, he said, became his lifeline when the road felt impossible.
“This degree came after years of struggle, hard work, prayer, and unwavering determination,” he wrote. “It wouldn’t have been possible without my support system.”
After earning his degree, Anthony achieved another major milestone — passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a nationwide exam that qualifies nurses to practice professionally in the United States.
For his mother, watching her son follow the same path she once walked, from nursing student to licensed professional — was a full-circle moment filled with pride and gratitude.
