Young African man who failed WAEC with 4Fs and 3Es finally becomes successful, earns PhD at US university

AFRICA | A young African man who failed WAEC with 4Fs and 3Es finally becomes successful, earns PhD at US university.

A young man named George Asiamah, from Ghana, overcame failing grades in his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams to earn a PhD from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

George shared on Facebook that he faced academic setbacks early on, struggling to gain admission to a senior high school due to his low junior high grades.

With the advice of a relative, he chose a public school as his third option and was admitted. Initially, George aimed to study General Science, but his uncle encouraged him to switch to Business.

To support his studies, his uncle bought him a bicycle, which motivated George to attend classes regularly. Despite his initial dedication, George’s progress was disrupted when his school decided to cancel the Business program.

Faced with uncertainty, George lost interest in his studies and often skipped classes. This lack of focus resulted in poor WAEC scores: 4 Fs and 3 Es. He described these grades as a “disgrace.”

Determined, George improved his study habits and secured admission to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned a degree in Economics. During his time at KNUST, he served as President of the Economics Students’ Association and worked as a Teaching Assistant.

His academic journey further culminated with an interdisciplinary PhD in Sustainability Science and Public Policy at the University of Sheffield, fully funded by a scholarship.

George advises young people to set clear goals, seek guidance from knowledgeable mentors, and stay focused. “Surround yourself with the right people and never give up, even when the odds seem against you,” he said.
