Charles' Story and How He Did It
Charles’ early life was not a smooth one. Raised by a young mother, he faced housing instability and uncertainty during his childhood.
At one point, he found himself watching from a bus stop near Meharry’s campus as students in white coats walked confidently toward their future. He did not know them personally, but in that moment, they became a symbol of hope.
From then on, he aspired to become like them despite his circumstances. Eventually, he moved in with his aunt, which provided some stability and a chance to refocus on his future.
And his academic journey began with determination. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from Lipscomb University in 2022.

That same year, he took a bold step forward by enrolling at Meharry Medical College to pursue his Doctor of Medicine degree, bringing him closer to the dream he once watched from a distance.
Beyond academics, Charles built a well-grounded portfolio for himself. As a first-generation college graduate and an Army combat medic, he was disciplined, service-oriented, and purposeful.
His journey was also shaped by mentorship, particularly from an alumna of his school whose support played a significant role in helping him turn possibility into reality.
Now, years after that moment at the bus stop, Charles stands among those same white coats, no longer as an observer, but as one of them. Additionally, another major milestone soon followed.
He successfully matched into an Emergency Medicine residency program at Nashville General Hospital/Meharry Medical College in the United States.
This marks the next phase of his journey, where he will receive specialized training to serve patients in critical and life-threatening situations.
Reflecting on his journey, Charles described the moment of his residency match as deeply emotional, one that symbolized not just personal success but the support, love, and community that carried him through.
