AFRICA | 25-year-old man who worked as a bus conductor to sponsor his education finally graduates, earns 4.59 first-class degree in Microbiology.
A 25-year-old Nigerian nan named Qudus Ige has proven that determination and resilience can overcome even the toughest challenges.
Despite working as a bus conductor to fund his education, Qudus graduated with a first-class degree in Microbiology, earning an impressive 4.59 CGPA from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
In an interview with Legit NG, Qudus shared that his journey was fraught with financial difficulties. From the outset, he had no support to pursue higher education and had to take on various jobs to save money.

During his studies, he became a bus conductor, earning between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 daily. Over time, he managed to save ₦300,000–₦400,000. Although some advised him to buy a bus and give it out on hire-purchase, Qudus prioritized his education above all else.
His academic journey was not without setbacks. He earned a disappointing 3.65 GPA in his first semester, but his determination saw him bounce back with consistent first-class results from his second semester in 100-level until graduation.
Beyond academics, Qudus acquired skills in graphic design and printing, which he began learning after his WAEC in 2016.
Reflecting on his six-year academic journey (2018–2024), which was extended due to the ASUU strike and the COVID-19 pandemic, Qudus expressed gratitude for the support of his loved ones, friends, and academic community.
Despite wishing he had chosen a more professional course, he remains grateful for the wisdom and knowledge gained.
In a LinkedIn post, Qudus described his achievement as a testament to the power of resilience and determination. He hopes his story inspires others to stay committed to their goals, even when faced with adversity.
Looking ahead, Qudus plans to further his studies through a Master’s or direct PhD program and is actively seeking scholarship opportunities to build on his final-year project.
His long-term goals include achieving financial stability through a fulfilling job or entrepreneurship and becoming a better version of himself every day.
Qudus offers this advice to students facing challenges. “Have a purpose, be ambitious, and face challenges head-on with determination and resilience. Your journey may not be easy, but the rewards will be worth it,” he said.
