AFRICA | A determined Nigerian man named Paul Dahunsi has made his mother proud after earning a Master’s degree in Meat Science and Production with distinction from the University of Arkansas.
His achievement is especially meaningful because it represents the fulfillment of a long journey shaped by his mother’s sacrifice and unwavering support.
Paul's Story and How She Did It
Paul revealed that his mother put her own education on hold so she could focus on supporting and financing his schooling. Her sacrifices became the driving force behind his determination to succeed.
According to him, there were times when his mother had to deny herself basic comforts just to ensure her children received a good education.
Paul began his higher education at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, where he earned a Diploma in Animal Health and Production Technology with Upper Credit in 2015.
He later gained admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied Agriculture and Animal Science and graduated in 2021 with a Second Class Upper degree, finishing among the top five students in his class.
For his undergraduate research project, Paul worked on upcycling spent brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to improve pig feed quality, gut health, and growth, while also addressing environmental concerns related to waste disposal.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Paul actively applied for international scholarships. His strong academic background and research experience eventually earned him a fully funded scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Animal Science (Meat Science) at the University of Arkansas.
During his master’s program, he also worked as a Graduate Research Assistant, conducting advanced research on meat quality and production systems.
Paul’s dedication and academic excellence earned him several recognitions during his studies, including paul Noland Scholarship Award, and a $5,000 Diversity Stipend Award from the University of Arkansas Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences
He credited many mentors and professors for supporting him throughout his academic journey.
Paul described seeing his mother celebrate his achievements as one of the most emotional moments of his life. “She didn’t drive the best car, wear the best clothes, or eat the best meals, but she gave me the best education,” he said.
He dedicated his success to his mother, Mrs. Dahunsi Oyetunde, a retired head teacher whose sacrifices laid the foundation for his achievements.
After completing his master’s degree with distinction in 2025, Paul continued his academic pursuit with a fully funded PhD in Food Science at Washington State University.
Reflecting on his journey, Paul emphasized the importance of courage and faith when pursuing one’s dreams.
“A dream should never remain in your head. One bold step forward can awaken it and set great milestones in motion,” he said.
