A young man named Andile Mkhungo, whose mother worked as a househelp to sponsor his education, has made her proud rewarding her lifelong sacrifices.
He graduated as a top medical doctor after earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he emerged among the best-performing students in his class.
His journey from the informal settlements of Umlazi to becoming a top medical graduate stands as a powerful example of how sacrifice, resilience, and education can transform a life once limited by circumstance into one defined by purpose and achievement.
Mkhungo's Story and How He Did It
Born in the rural community of Jolivet, Mkhungo’s journey into medicine began in a place where academic dreams are always blocked by poverty. But for him, education was the only path he believed could rewrite his family’s story.
Growing up, life was defined by financial struggle. His mother worked tirelessly as a domestic worker, often sacrificing her comfort and needs just to ensure her son could remain in school.
Every school fee paid was a quiet battle won, and every academic term completed was a step closer to a future she prayed for.
Despite these challenges, Mkhungo remained focused. He did not allow the struggles around him discourage him, instead, they became the foundation of his determination.

Living in Umlazi exposed him to inequality and hardship, but it also strengthened his resolve to succeed.
A turning point came when he lost his grandmother to complications of diabetes. That personal loss reshaped his ambition, turning his interest in science into a deeper calling to study medicine and help people battling similar conditions.
Mkhungo’s academic performance reflected his discipline and focus early on. He high school with seven distinctions and an impressive 90% aggregate, a performance that positioned him for admission into one of South Africa’s competitive medical programmes.
He was eventually admitted into the MBChB programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he pursued his medical studies with consistency and resilience.
Throughout his training, he benefited from financial support that helped ease the burden on his family, allowing him to focus fully on his demanding academic and clinical work.
But medical school was not easy. It required long hours of studying, clinical rotations, emotional endurance, and constant academic pressure. However, Mkhungo remained committed, driven by the sacrifices his mother made and the future he envisioned for his family.
After years of rigorous training, Mkhungo graduated not only as a medical doctor but also as one of the top-performing students in his MBChB class.
His achievement was a defining moment for his family, especially his mother, whose years of sacrifice finally culminated in the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
Reflecting, he described the moment as one of the proudest of his life, acknowledging that behind every success was his mother’s unwavering belief and resilience.
Today, he serves as a medical intern at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, one of the largest and busiest hospitals in Southern Africa. The experience has exposed him to complex medical cases and fast-paced clinical environments, further shaping his growth as a young doctor.
Looking ahead, Mkhungo hopes to specialize in internal medicine, with a growing interest in radiology. His goal is not only to advance in his medical career but also to give back to the community that shaped him.
