A brilliant Nigerian man named Sunday Ogundele has achieved extraordinary success, earning a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a perfect 4.00 GPA from the University of Texas at El Paso(UTEP).
His journey to success began in 2018 at the University of Ilorin, where he enrolled for a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a first class, an achievement that paved the way for him to study abroad, but the path to getting there was not smooth.
Sunday's Story and How He Did It
After completing secondary school in 2016, his first UTME attempt was disturbed by circumstances beyond his control, resulting in a low score of 176/400 despite excellent WAEC results.
Instead of giving up, he attended the University of Ilorin School of Preliminary Studies to improve his chances. His next UTME attempt scored 280/400, opening the door to his undergraduate studies.
During his time at UNILORIN, Sunday set clear goals, staying disciplined, consistent, and determined. His efforts paid off and he graduated in 2023 with a First Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, earning a 4.73/5.00 CGPA (94.6%).
Additionally, he was inducted as a graduate member of the Nigerian Society of Nigeria (GMNSE), earning six scholarship awards and multiple academic recognitions.

After graduation, he applied to study abroad, and in 2024, his dedication was rewarded with the Texas Instruments Foundation Scholarship, fully funding his Master’s degree at UTEP.
In 2025, Sunday graduated with a Master’s in Electrical Engineering, achieving a perfect 4.00 GPA. He also received several awards, including the Arleigh B. and Maximina G. Templeton Scholarship and the ECE Graduate Service Award, recognizing his mentorship and contributions to the community.
During graduate school, Sunday worked as a Teaching Assistant for two years, tutoring and mentoring over 200 students while conducting research in network fault management under the guidance of Dr. McGarry.
This experience, he said sharpened his technical expertise, research skills, and passion for advancing the field. Reflecting on his journey, Sunday recalled the difficulties he faced adjusting to a new country.
“Adjusting to a new country and navigating the rigor of graduate school was challenging, but every difficulty became an opportunity for growth. Dedication, discipline, and resilience opened doors I never imagined,” he said.
Sunday expressed his gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, family, and the UTEP faculty who made this achievement possible. He said their support, encouragement, and belief in him made the achievement possible.
Grateful for the journey so far, Sunday said he is excited for what lies ahead.
