AMERICA | A young scholar, Markis Hamilton, has built an inspiring academic journey, earning his bachelor’s degree with honors in the United States and securing a fully funded PhD opportunity, without first completing a master’s degree.

Markis Story and How He Did It
In 2024, Markis graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Fayetteville State University, earning Magna Cum Laude honors in recognition of his academic excellence. But his achievements went far beyond classroom performance.
While still an undergraduate, Markis actively pursued research opportunities. He participated in a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, working alongside researchers at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
These experiences strengthened his research background and exposed him to cutting-edge biomedical research.

He also attended the Black In Microbiology virtual conference, an event showcasing groundbreaking work by Black scientists in microbiology. Markis described the experience as eye-opening and motivating, highlighting the importance of diversity and representation in science.
His strong academic record and growing research portfolio opened bigger doors. Markis secured a scholarship grant to begin PhD studies at Meharry Medical College.
He further distinguished himself by participating in the college’s 69th Research Day, where he received the Rising Scholars Award, recognizing his contributions and promise in scientific research.
Following this, Markis worked as a research associate at the institution and successfully passed the written and oral qualifying examinations required to become a PhD candidate. He is now officially pursuing his PhD, specializing in biomedical and environmental sciences.
Reflecting on his journey, Markis expressed deep gratitude for the support and mentorship he has received, as well as his faith, which he credits for guiding his progress.
He now looks forward to advancing research at the intersection of environmental toxicology, military health, and public health protection, hoping his work will contribute to improved healthcare outcomes.
