What is the MCAT?

Unlike examinations such as JAMB, which are used for undergraduate admission in Nigeria, the MCAT is generally taken by students seeking admission to medical school after completing or while completing university-level studies.
The exam assesses your understanding of scientific concepts, as well as your ability to analyse information, solve problems and reason from evidence. However, a strong MCAT score alone does not guarantee admission. Medical schools also consider your academic record, experiences, essays, interviews and other requirements, so you need to build a strong overall application.
Who Should Take the MCAT?
The MCAT is commonly required by U.S. medical schools, although each school sets its own admission requirements. U.S. medical schools use the exam as a standardized measure to assess applicants from different academic backgrounds.
As an international student, you can take the MCAT. The AAMC states that there are no additional eligibility requirements for international examinees. Even if you are currently studying or already hold an MBBS or equivalent degree, you can register for the exam without special permission.
For Canadian medical schools, the requirement varies by institution. Some schools require the MCAT, while others do not. Before you register, check the requirements of each medical school you plan to apply to and confirm whether the MCAT is required.

MCAT Exam Format and Sections
The MCAT tests both scientific knowledge and reasoning, so simply memorising facts is not enough. The computer-based exam has 230 multiple-choice questions across four sections, with 6 hours and 15 minutes of content time. With breaks and other test-day activities included, you should expect to spend about 7.5 hours at the test centre. Below are the sections to expect:
1. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
This section contains 59 questions to be completed in 95 minutes. It tests your understanding of chemistry, physics and biology and your ability to apply scientific principles to biological systems. The section covers general chemistry (30%), biochemistry (25%), physics (25%), organic chemistry (15%) and biology (5%), with a score range of 118–132.
2. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS)
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section contains 53 passage-based questions to be completed in 90 minutes. Unlike the science sections, it does not require specific scientific knowledge. Instead, you’ll read passages from the humanities and social sciences and answer questions that test your comprehension, analysis and reasoning skills. The score range is 118–132.
3. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
This section contains 59 questions to be completed in 95 minutes. It focuses on biology and biochemistry, while also testing your ability to apply scientific knowledge, reason through problems and interpret information. The section covers biology (65%), biochemistry (25%), general chemistry (5%) and organic chemistry (5%), with a score range of 118–132.
4. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
This section contains 59 questions to be completed in 95 minutes. It covers psychology, sociology and biology, with a focus on how biological, psychological and social factors influence behaviour and health. The section covers psychology (65%), sociology (30%) and biology (5%), with a score range of 118–132.
Overall, the MCAT score ranges from 472 to 528, with each of the four sections scored from 118 to 132. There is no single score that guarantees admission. Your target should depend on the schools you want to apply to and the strength of the rest of your application.
Can Nigerian Students Take the MCAT?
Yes, Nigerian students can take the MCAT, but Nigeria was not listed as an international MCAT testing location in the AAMC’s 2026 testing calendar. The listed locations included countries such as South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and Australia.
This means you would need to choose an available international testing location when registering rather than plan to take the exam in Nigeria.
