A brilliant Nigerian scholar, Abass Oguntade has emerged as the best-graduating student of the Department of Computer Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Nigeria.
He achieved an outstanding cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.96 on a 5.0 scale, cementing his place as a top achiever in his university.Sharing his story on LinkedIn, Abass credited his academic success to determination, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.
Reflecting on his journey, he recalled his admission in 2018 with exceptional entry scores: a UTME score of 342/400, seven A’s and two B’s in his O’Level exams, and 82% in the Post-UTME. From the outset, he set a singular goal—to achieve an “A” in every course, one step at a time.

Despite starting strong with a perfect 5.0 CGPA in his first year, Abass encountered setbacks in subsequent years, particularly in practical courses, where he earned B grades despite his best efforts.
“I learned that some things, like practicals, were beyond my control,” he explained. Instead of dwelling on these challenges, Abass doubled down on his efforts in other areas, maintaining his position as a top student in his department and faculty throughout his academic journey.
In his final year, free from practicals, Abass pushed himself even harder by taking on three additional lower-level courses and earning A’s in all his classes, including his final-year project. This feat brought his CGPA to an impressive 4.96/5.0.
Abass’s academic excellence did not go unnoticed. He was recognized as the best graduating student in his department and faculty and received the University of Ilorin Scholar Award for five consecutive years.
He was also named among the top 30 most reputable students in his department and the top 60 in his faculty. Beyond academics, Abass actively participated in extracurricular activities, including tutoring peers and competing in global tech challenges.
One notable highlight was his participation in an international software development hackathon, where he and a friend emerged as the first runners-up among hundreds of participants worldwide.
Reflecting on his achievements, Abass expressed deep gratitude for the people and experiences that shaped his journey. “I was fortunate to meet individuals who supported me as I settled into the department and began my tech journey,” he said.
Looking ahead, Abass is eager to tackle new challenges, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and contribute to impactful projects. “This journey has taught me the value of resilience and hard work. It has fueled my motivation to aim even higher,” he shared.
As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, Abass remains committed to making a difference and inspiring others to pursue excellence, no matter the obstacles they face.
