Meet Ameenah Kopada, UNILORIN’s overall best medical student who earned 20 out of 32 awards

AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian Lady named Ameenah Abiola Kopada has set an extraordinary record at the College of Medicine, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), after emerging as the Overall Best Graduating Medical Student.

Her exceptional performance earned 20 out of the college’s 32 awards — a feat that reflects years of hard work, resilience, and consistent academic brilliance.

Ameenah's Story and How She Did It

Ameenah’s journey into medicine started in 2017, when she walked into UNILORIN as a curious first-year student, excited, hopeful, and unaware of the demanding path ahead.

What she did not know then was that medical school would become a lifelong tutor in discipline, perseverance, resilience, and the strength of support systems

Beyond anatomy labs and clinical postings, medical school taught her about herself, her capacity for growth, her ability to navigate uncertainty, and the truth that “Allah crowns even the smallest efforts,” in her words.

Eight years later, those lessons culminated in a moment she describes as overwhelming and deeply humbling.

At the induction and award ceremony, Ameenah watched her name being called again and again, each award representing a chapter of long nights, revived hope, and relentless effort.

Among the 20 awards she clinched were Best Student in Pathology,  Pharmacology (Female),  Paediatrics & Child Health,  Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Physiology.

Ameenah was also awarded for earning distinction in Epidemiology & Community Health, and she received the Departmental Prize for the Best Graduating Medical Student and the best graduating student, Faculty of Clinical Sciences.

Just a week later, Ameenah was officially inducted into the medical profession,  a transition she describes as a moment of “gratitude, clarity, and direction.”

Medical school opened Ameenah’s eyes to the future of healthcare,  a future where medicine meets data, storytelling, and technology.

She is now stepping into a new chapter as a Medical Doctor, Health Writer, and Beginner Data Analyst

With a passion for merging clinical knowledge with research, data, and innovation, Ameenah hopes to contribute to a more efficient, tech-driven healthcare system in Nigeria and beyond.

She also expressed openness to collaborations and opportunities in health tech, public health, global health scholarships, research, and medical writing.

Ameenah credits her success to discipline, faith, and the support of loved ones,  and she believes her journey is only beginning.
