A brilliant young lady named Amerie Akuffo has made history after emerging as the first Black valedictorian in 55 years at Jonathan C. Gibbs High School in the United States.
Amerie achieved this historic milestone after graduating with an outstanding 4.52 cumulative grade point average (GPA), earning the highest academic honor in her graduating class
Amerie's Story and How She Did It
Since the inception of Jonathan C. Gibbs High School in 1971, it had never recorded a Black valedictorian since its integration, but Amerie broke that record.
In addition to being the school’s top graduating student, she also became the first valedictorian of the school’s BETA Program (Business, Entrepreneurial & Technology Academy) for the Class of 2026.
According to her mother, Samantha Harris, Amerie had demonstrated exceptional academic ability from a young age.
Sharing the news on Facebook, she explained that her daughter had consistently shown discipline, focus, and determination throughout her education.
“From VPK to this moment, we have watched you approach every challenge with discipline, focus, and quiet determination. Your commitment to excellence has never been about competing with others, but honoring your potential,” Samantha said.
Amerie’s parents and family expressed immense pride in her historic accomplishment, describing it as a moment they will always cherish.
Her mother noted that Amerie’s journey proves that consistency, faith, and steady dedication can lead to extraordinary achievements.
“What you have accomplished is truly spectacular. You have not only achieved something remarkable, but you have also blazed a trail for others to follow.”
