AFRICA | An exceptional Nigerian man named Benedict Umeozor has emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), graduating with a perfect 5.00/5.00 cumulative grade point average in Business Administration.
His achievement is even more remarkable as he became the first person in his family to graduate from a university, turning a personal milestone into a historic family achievement.
Benedict's Story and How He Did It
Benedict’s academic journey officially began at UNILAG after several setbacks. After completing secondary school in 2017, he sat for JAMB in 2018 but did not gain admission.
Though painful and frustrating, the experience taught him patience and resilience. He tried again in 2019 and secured admission into UNILAG, a turning point that changed his life and family history forever.
Sharing his story, Benedict described his journey as “not a straight line, but a testament to resilience, faith, and community.”
But his admission in 2019, a four-year academic plan quickly turned into a six-year marathon due to the COVID-19 pandemic and repeated ASUU strikes that disrupted academic calendars.

Rather than remain idle during the prolonged strikes, Benedict used the time to teach himself front-end development, starting with just his mobile phone.
With guidance from a mentor, he gradually built his skills and balanced coding with his academic responsibilities.
Driven by a desire to help others, he co-founded A-Team Tutorials with a friend, an initiative that went on to support and teach hundreds of students within his faculty. The experience reinforced his belief that success is more meaningful when it lifts others along the way.
Despite juggling academics, tech work, and tutoring, Benedict maintained academic excellence.
He credited a study group known as “The Achievers” for helping him stay disciplined and focused, noting that the people one surrounds oneself with can significantly shape success.
He credited his parents, who, despite never attending university themselves, committed their limited resources to support his education. During his valedictory speech, Benedict emotionally acknowledged their struggles, stating, “today, your sacrifice is wearing a cap and gown.”
Reflecting on graduating with a perfect CGPA, Benedict emphasized that his success was not rooted in extraordinary intelligence, but in consistency, faith, discipline, and the belief that background does not define destiny.
Addressing the UNILAG Class of 2025, he reminded his peers that their degrees represent more than academic achievement; they symbolize survival through strikes, a global pandemic, financial pressure, and uncertainty.
“We are not just graduates of our disciplines. We are graduates of resilience, adaptability, and perseverance,” he said.
As he steps into the future as a business-minded developer, Benedict hopes to build solutions, create value, and inspire other first-generation students to keep going.
