A brilliant Nigerian lady named Boluwatife Akindele has achieved exceptional academic success after emerging as the overall best graduating medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria.
She earned the honor after completing her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with an outstanding nine distinctions, a rare feat that reflects years of discipline, consistency, and excellence.
Boluwatife's Story and How She Did It
Boluwatife began her medical journey in 2018 and maintained an impressive record throughout the demanding years of medical training. Reflecting on her achievement, she admitted she was surprised by the recognition.
“I am still in shock, to be very honest, as I was not expecting it at all. But I am grateful,” she said.
She described each phase of her training as unique. Her first year was challenging as she adjusted to university life. The second phase became even tougher with new medical courses, unfamiliar terminologies, and intense practical sessions.
According to her, one of the hardest parts was putting in so much effort without immediately seeing matching results. However, she stayed committed and kept improving.
Boluwatife shared that her fourth year became one of her best experiences because she enjoyed the clinical rotations and exposure to different departments, even with long daily schedules from morning till evening.
By the final year, she admitted feeling mentally exhausted, especially seeing many peers in other schools graduate earlier. Still, she pushed through successfully.
Boluwatife explained that she did not follow a rigid study timetable. Instead, she focused on learning actively during classes, ward postings, and practical sessions while also participating in daily academic discussions.
Despite the intense demands of medicine, she remained active in extracurricular activities and student organizations.
She was involved in Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA), IFUMSA Quiz and Debate Club (IQDC), Ife Students Interest Group in the Neurosciences (iSIGN) and Antimicrobial Resistance Club.
She also held leadership positions and participated in volunteering opportunities aligned with her interests. Boluwatife identified time management as one of her major struggles, balancing classes, reading, and other activities.
Another challenge was dealing with disappointing results despite working hard. To overcome this, she relied heavily on academic discussion groups, mentorship from senior colleagues, and structured peer learning.
Boluwatife also credited her family for providing emotional and financial support throughout the difficult seasons of medical school.
She said their encouragement helped her stay grounded whenever she felt burnt out or discouraged.
She advised students to understand themselves early, discover what study methods work best for them, surround themselves with people who share similar goals and never neglect their health and well-being.
Boluwatife emphasized the importance of eating well, resting properly, and taking breaks when necessary.
