Meet Chioma Njelita, COOU’s best graduating student who earned 7 distinctions in Medicine

AFRICA | 21-year-old, Chioma Karen Njelita has achieved academic success at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), emerging as the Best Graduating Student of the College of Medicine with an astonishing seven distinctions.

Chioma’s achievement is particularly exceptional as she made history as the first ever doctor to become the best graduating student in the university.

 

Chioma's Story and How She Did It

Chioma began her medical journey at COOU in 2019. From her first day in the College of Medicine, she displayed unwavering focus and discipline.

For six years, she consistently ranked among the top students in her class, building a reputation for exceptional academic commitment.

Her induction into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) during the university’s 12th Induction Ceremony marked the culmination of years of sacrifice, resilience, and excellence.

Chioma did not just graduate; she dominated across the most rigorous areas of Medicine. She earned top distinctions in Pharmacology, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Surgery.

Speaking about her record-setting accomplishment, Chioma credited her family, lecturers, faith, and personal discipline.

“I am dedicating my academic success to my family upbringing, dedication to my studies, hard work, and discipline. From the cradle, my parents demanded nothing less than utmost success,” she said.

She acknowledged that her journey was far from easy. Medicine challenged her in ways that tested her resilience.

“There were times I failed my tests, but I would quickly pick myself up and work even harder. All these have defined my academic journey and made me more confident.”

Chioma also expressed gratitude to her lecturers: “Without them, I wouldn’t have qualified to become a medical doctor. They imparted the knowledge that made me who I am today.”

For Chioma, becoming the best graduating medical student with seven distinctions is a win not just for herself but for everyone who invested in her and “a win for every girl-child.”
