Dr. Cumming-John's Story and How She Did It

Dr. Cummings-John achieved this remarkable milestone after being inducted as a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) during its 2024 Annual General Meeting held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

This achievement not only marks a personal victory but also represents a major step forward for women in medicine across West Africa.

She carries a powerful legacy as the granddaughter and namesake of Constance Agatha Cummings-John, a trailblazer who made history as the first woman in Africa to join a municipal council and the first female Mayor of Freetown.

With such a legacy, Dr. Cummings-John understood the responsibility of upholding excellence, and she did just that.

As a general surgeon, she is equipped to perform a wide range of surgical procedures, diagnose and manage various medical conditions, and provide care before, during, and after surgery.

Her achievement is especially significant given the shortage of specialists in the country. At the time of her induction, Sierra Leone had only 0.0625 general surgeons per 100,000 people, highlighting the urgent need for more professionals in the field.

Dr. Cummings-John is currently based at Connaught Hospital, the country’s main adult referral and teaching hospital in Freetown.

She remains deeply committed to improving healthcare delivery while also inspiring young women to pursue careers in surgery and medicine.

Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed joy at receiving such an honor in her home country, where her impact is most needed.
