An exceptional young girl named Damilola Adeolu has achieved remarkable academic success, emerging as the overall winner of the African Spelling Bee Competition after outperforming contestants from over 30 countries across the continent.
Spelling Bee competitions test vocabulary depth, memory, pronunciation, and composure under pressure, making her win a true mark of academic brilliance at such a young age.
Damilola's Story and How She Did It
The competition, held in Harare, Zimbabwe, brought together some of the brightest young minds in Africa. Representing Nigeria, Damilola, a student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, stood out through multiple rigorous stages of the contest.
From speed rounds, where participants had to spell 20 words within one minute, to intense elimination rounds, she demonstrated precision, confidence, and consistency, ultimately securing the top position.
Her achievement earned her both national and international recognition. It was officially announced by the Nigeria Spelling Bee organisers, affiliated with the Federal Ministry of Education, further validating the significance of her win.
In addition, her country, Nigeria, also recorded an impressive performance overall.
In the same competition, Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, placed third, while South Africa’s Ashton Singh came second.
Additionally, Nigeria emerged as the second-best country in the overall team rankings—highlighting the nation’s continued strength and consistency in the African Spelling Bee.
Damilola’s victory did not happen overnight; it is the result of years of preparation, persistence, and continuous improvement.
Before the international win, she previously placed second in the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, followed by another second-place finish at the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee. In 2025, she placed fifth at the African Spelling Bee and second at the Nigerian Spelling Bee.
Rather than being discouraged by these near wins, she used each experience as a stepping stone. Her breakthrough began with a first-place finish at the Ekiti State level, which qualified her for the national finals in Port Harcourt, where she finished second.
That performance earned her a place on the continental stage, where she finally claimed the title she had been working towards.
Beyond the trophy, Damilola Adeolu’s achievement reinforces Nigeria’s strong legacy in academic competitions across Africa and inspires young students to pursue knowledge with dedication.
