AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian Lady named Dumebi Valerie Duru has graduated from Pan-Atlantic University with a perfect 5.00/5.00 cumulative grade point average in Computer Science.
Her outstanding performance made her the first student in the university’s history to achieve such an extraordinary feat, which in turn also earned her the overall best graduating student of her set.
Dumebi's Story and How She Did It
Dumebi’s journey at Pan-Atlantic University began in 2021, but her excellence has shown from before then. In high school, she was recognized as the dux scholar — the top-performing student — even though she was not the valedictorian.
That recognition shaped her identity and ignited a personal goal: to someday graduate with the highest honor. So when she entered the university, she set a bold target for herself: Earn a 5.00 CGPA.
From her very first year, Dumebi delivered excellence relentlessly.
She earned straight A’s in every course, including programming, mathematics, algorithms, system design, and more.
She maintained the same level of brilliance semester after semester, even through stress, heavy coding projects, late-night debugging sessions, academic competitions, and leadership responsibilities
And the emotional toll that often comes with striving for perfection, but her discipline never wavered.
As she grew academically, Dumebi also flourished socially and professionally. In her final year alone, she won multiple awards at key university events, including the Programming Guru Award, Class Scholar (Computer Science), and the Most Innovative Tech Award – Female.
These recognitions highlighted not just academic brilliance, but innovation, leadership, and technical creativity. After years of hard work, Dumebi finally received her full transcript — and her dream became reality.
She graduated as the Overall Best Graduating Student of the 2025 Class with a historic 5.00/5.00 CGPA, becoming the first person in Pan-Atlantic University’s history to accomplish this.
During her valedictory speech, Dumebi reflected on what drove her: She shared that achieving a perfect record was a promise she made to herself — a way to “make up” for high school and prove to herself that greatness is attainable with intention and effort.
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to God, her parents — both engineers — and her siblings. In a beautiful twist, two of the four siblings, including herself, were valedictorians in the same year at different schools.
She also thanked her friends, mentors, priests, and classmates “for the laughter, frustrations, guidance, and growth.”
Dumebi’s valedictory speech centered on a powerful theme:
Legacy. She asked her fellow graduates what they wished to be remembered for and encouraged them to live as people of integrity, values, and impact.
