An exceptional scientist, Jedidah Isler, has made history as the first African-American woman to earn a PhD in astrophysics from Yale University in the United States..
Her achievement is not just historic, it represents years of rigorous scientific research, resilience, and dedication to advancing knowledge in one of the most complex fields of science.
Isler's Story and How She Did It
Jedidah’s passion for astronomy began at a young age. Growing up between New York and Virginia, her curiosity about the universe was sparked around the age of 11 when her sister gifted her a telescope.
From that moment, she began exploring the night sky, setting the foundation for a future in science. However, her journey was not without challenges.
Shortly before leaving for college, her family faced financial difficulties when her father left, creating uncertainty about her educational path. Despite this, she remained focused on her goals.
Since her undergraduate institution, Norfolk State University, did not offer a degree in astronomy, she chose to study physics, a decision that kept her aligned with her long-term aspirations.

During her undergraduate years, she actively pursued internships and research opportunities related to astronomy, building a strong academic profile.
Isler graduated magna cum laude(high honors) from the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS), a program designed to develop minority scientists.
Determined to go further, she earned a Master’s degree in physics from Fisk University and later continued her studies at Yale, where she also obtained another master’s degree.
She was among the early participants of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-PhD Bridge Program, an initiative aimed at increasing diversity in STEM fields.
In 2014, Jedidah reached a historic milestonee, arning her PhD in astrophysics from Yale University. Her research focused on blazars, which are highly energetic phenomena powered by supermassive black holes.
Isler’s doctoral dissertation earned her the prestigious Roger Doxsey Dissertation Prize from the American Astronomical Society.
Her journey also included moments of adversity. She once recalled an incident during her early days at Yale where she was subjected to a dismissive and biased remark by a fellow studentan, experience that highlights some of the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in academia.
Yet, she remained steadfast and continued to excel. Following her PhD, Jedidah pursued postdoctoral research and built a strong career as an astrophysicist, educator, and advocate for diversity in science.
Today, she serves as a professor at Dartmouth College, where her research explores the physics of blazars and the powerful jet streams emitted by supermassive black holes.
