A brilliant 19-year-old lady named Jessica Hyatt has made history as the highest-rated African American female chess player ever recorded in the United States.
Her story is a powerful reminder that excellence, when nurtured with opportunity and determination, can break barriers and redefine what is possible.
Jessica's Story and How She Did It
Jessica’s journey did not start overnight. She was introduced to chess through Chess in the Schools, a nonprofit organization that teaches the game in underserved communities. From a young age, she showed remarkable potential, quickly rising through the ranks.
By the age of 14, she had already won the New York State Scholastic Championship—marking her as a rising star. Her growth continued rapidly.
Between 2021 and 2022, she achieved a rare feat by defeating two grandmasters, placing her among the very few African American women to accomplish such a milestone in competitive play.
In 2024, she reached another historic moment. Jessica earned her National Master title, becoming the youngest African American woman to achieve it.
She is also a five-time member of the USA National Youth Team, consistently representing excellence at the national level. Her achievements also opened academic doors.
She was awarded the Daniel Feinberg Success in Chess Award, which came with a $40,000 college scholarship, recognizing not just her talent, but her dedication and impact in the chess community.
With this scholarship, she enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, where she is currently studying Computer Science and is on track to graduate in 2027.
Beyond her personal success, she has a bigger mission. Jessica has expressed her desire to mentor young girls of color and expand representation in competitive chess—using her platform to inspire the next generation.
