A brilliant young man named Mubarak Olasunkanmi has achieved outstanding academic success after graduating as the overall best student in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Ibadan.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree with an exceptional 4.96/5.00 CGPA, a result that reflects years of resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Mubarak's Story and How She Did It
Mubarak began his academic journey in 2019, but like many Nigerian students, his path was delayed by the ASUU strike and the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually resuming fully in 2021.
His first year came with a major setback; he lost his phone, along with valuable materials he had worked on during the break. What could have discouraged him instead became a turning point.
He moved from hostel to hostel, relying on friends and available resources just to keep studying. Despite the odds, he remained focused, spending long hours in reading rooms and attending tutorials, even traveling long distances to teach and earn support money.
In his 200-level, Mubarak made the bold decision to start taking tutorials, balancing academic work, teaching responsibilities, and personal development. All without the convenience that many students take for granted, in his words.
His discipline paid off. Over the course of his degree, he achieved an incredible academic record, 81 A’s and just 4 B’s out of 85 courses, and consistently he recorded high GPAs each year, starting with a perfect 4.00/4.00 in his first year.
These efforts culminated in his final 4.96 CGPA, earning him Best Graduating Student, Department of Petroleum Engineering, and Second Best Graduating Student, Faculty of Technology.
Reflecting on his journey, Mubarak expressed deep gratitude to Allah, his family, lecturers, mentors, and friends who supported him through the ups and downs.
