A brilliant Nigerian man named Oluwaseun Edokpayi has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with First-Class Honors from Osun State University after graduating with an impressive 4.58 cumulative grade point average (CGPA).
His outstanding performance not only earned him the award of Best Graduating Student in the department, but also made him the first student in the history of the university to graduate with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering.
His achievement stands as a remarkable story of vision, persistence, sacrifice, and years of consistent academic excellence.
Oluwaseun's Story and How She Did It
Oluwaseun’s journey toward making history began long before his admission into Osun State University. In 2016, he completed his National Diploma in Metallurgical and Material Engineering with an Upper Credit from Yaba College of Technology.
Driven by the desire to advance academically he applied for direct entry admission into Osun State University and secured admission in 2017 to study Mechanical Engineering at the 200 level.
From the very beginning, he approached the journey with clear academic goals. During his first academic session in 2017/2018, he earned a CGPA of 4.17/5.00, laying a good foundation for himself.
However, the defining moment came during the university’s induction and convocation ceremony held in 2019. While observing the award presentations, he realized that no student in the department had ever graduated with a First Class in Mechanical Engineering.
That realization sparked a personal challenge within him. Oluwaseun asked himself why such a feat had never been achieved and immediately made a bold decision that he would become the first student to graduate with a First Class.
Not only that, he would also emerge as the best graduating student in his department.
At the time, the goal seemed extremely difficult, especially considering the demanding nature of Mechanical Engineering and his existing CGPA. Yet, rather than becoming discouraged, Oluwaseun turned the challenge into motivation.
He prayed for guidance and began strategically planning his academic journey session by session. From the 2018/2019 academic session onward, he carefully calculated grade targets for every course in order to steadily improve his CGPA.
But the process demanded discipline and sacrifice. Oluwaseun described the journey as one filled with sleepless nights, relentless studying, and intentional focus.
There were periods when he deliberately avoided subscribing to mobile data on his phone so he could minimize distractions and stay committed to his academic goals.
Beyond personal study, Oluwaseun also worked collaboratively with classmates, organizing tutorials and teaching difficult engineering courses to help others understand challenging concepts.
Throughout the journey, he received guidance and encouragement from lecturers, mentors, project supervisors, friends, and family members who contributed to his success. He particularly acknowledged the support of his course advisers alongside his final year project supervisor.
His academic journey was also strengthened through scholarship support. Oluwaseun was a beneficiary of the MTN Foundation Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme in 2019, a recognition that further highlighted dedication to excellence.
Years after setting that ambitious goal, Oluwaseun eventually achieved what had never been done before in the department’s history.
And his name is now permanently written in the record books of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Osun State University as its first-ever First-Class graduate.
Reflecting on the achievement, he expressed gratitude to God and everyone who supported him through the challenging journey.
As he celebrates the milestone, Oluwaseun says he remains open to new opportunities, professional growth, graduate assistantships, and fully funded PhD scholarships that will help him continue advancing academically and professionally.
