Salenah's Story and How She Did It

Salenah’s remarkable academic journey began at an unusually young age. Long before becoming the youngest doctoral graduate in the university, she had already built a reputation for exceptional academic performance.

Her educational path took a unique turn during childhood after she experienced bullying from peers because of her advanced academic abilities.

To better support her learning pace, she began homeschooling from the sixth grade and enrolled in an accelerated homeschool program that fast-tracked her education.

The program allowed her to complete high school at only 14 years old, setting the stage for a series of groundbreaking accomplishments.

At just 17, Salenah made history at the University of Houston after earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Business. While many teenagers her age were still in high school, she had already completed a university degree.

Rather than slowing down, she continued advancing academically with remarkable consistency. By the age of 18, she had earned a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston’s College of Education.

Even at that age, Salenah already had a clear vision for her future. She expressed a strong passion for educational development, psychological wellbeing, and policies that support disadvantaged children and underserved communities.

Part of her motivation came from her own personal experiences with bullying, which inspired her interest in research surrounding psychological wellbeing and student support systems.

At the time, she revealed that she was already working on bullying-related research, hoping to encourage young students facing similar challenges not to give up on themselves.

Years later, her dedication to education and research has now culminated in another historic achievement.

At 23 years old, Salenah earned her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston, officially becoming the institution’s youngest PhD graduate according to university records.

While receiving the doctorate degree, she emphasized that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming society.

She added that empowering underserved communities through education and technology can unlock enormous potential and create meaningful societal change.

Her mother, Quailly Cartier, proudly described her daughter as exceptional and expressed gratitude for the kind of person she has become through the journey.

Reflecting on her seven-year journey at the University of Houston, she expressed gratitude to her family, mentors, advisors, and friends who consistently supported and challenged her throughout the process.

She also encouraged young people to challenge themselves, set goals, and actively work toward achieving them rather than waiting for a “perfect” time to begin.

Looking back on her accomplishments, Salenah explained that many of the milestones she achieved were once simply written goals on paper, which later became reality through discipline, persistence, and belief in herself.

Looking ahead, Salenah hopes to become an educator, researcher, and policymaker who can improve educational systems and create policies that nurture psychological wellbeing, especially for disadvantaged children.
