Meet Seyi Ogunfunminiyi, UNILAG’s overall best student in Finance who earned 4.95/5.00CGPA

A brilliant young lady named Seyi Ogunfunminiyi has achieved remarkable academic success, earning a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Lagos with an outstanding 4.95/5.00 cumulative grade point average.

Her exceptional performance earned her the title of Best Graduating Student in her department, making her one of the top-performing students in the university.

Seyi's Story and How She Did It

But her journey to this moment came with challenges. Seyi’s path into the university began with repeated setbacks.

She wrote the UTME five times, but each attempt fell short due to challenges with her O’Level results, particularly Mathematics. Despite her determination, admission remained out of reach, and at one point, the disappointment became overwhelming.

Everything changed when she made a bold decision. Encouraged by her brother, she decided to rewrite her O’Level exams, facing her long-standing fear of Mathematics head-on.

With the help of a mentor who provided free weekend tutorials, she gradually built her confidence and improved her performance. And that decision become the turning point.

After years of persistence, she finally secured admission into the University of Lagos in 2019. From the moment she resumed, she approached her academics with renewed focus and clarity.

In her first semester, she achieved a perfect 5.0 grae point average (GPA). According to her, that result was more than just a score, it was proof that her dream was valid.

From that point on, she set a clear goal, to graduate with a first-class degree. Her journey through university was defined by discipline and consistency.

Seyi committed herself to intense study routines, attending night classes, reading for long hours, and maximizing every learning opportunity. Whether in lecture halls, at home, or late at night, she remained focused on her goal.

She also built a strong support system. Seyi credited her success to her brother, friends and mentors stating that they offered academic support, shared study resources, and encouraged her through difficult moments.

Their belief in her potential helped strengthen her own confidence. Over time, her vision grew.

While she initially aimed for a first-class degree, those around her began to call her “BGS” (Best Graduating Student) as early as her first year. That belief pushed her to aim higher, and she rose to meet it.

Her efforts paid off. She graduated with a remarkable 4.95 CGPA, earning her place as one of the best in her class. Beyond her degree, she also became a qualified Chartered Accountant, further strengthening her academic and professional profile.

Reflecting on her success in a LinkdeIn post, Seyi described it as surreal and deeply humbling, acknowledging the support of everyone who contributed to her journey.
