AMERICA | Mother and son graduate from the same university on the same day, sets record.
In an extraordinary achievement, Toi Parks and her son, Javari Parks, graduated together from Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) in the United States, setting a remarkable record.
Toi, 45, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, while Javari earned his bachelor’s degree in Community Health.
Toi, a U.S. Navy veteran, began her academic journey at JCSU’s Metropolitan College in 2013. Despite facing significant challenges, including health issues and surviving domestic violence, she persevered to achieve her academic goals.

“These last four years, I had to persevere through illness and surgeries, but I never let that stop my academic achievements,” Toi shared with Essence. She described her time at JCSU as fulfilling, highlighting the small class sizes and strong connections with classmates and professors.
Javari initially attended Hampton University in Virginia but transferred to JCSU during his sophomore year due to his mother’s declining health.
“He went to Hampton his freshman year, but because I was sick a lot, he transferred back home. I have a younger daughter, and he was concerned that if I had to go into the hospital, there would be no one to take her to school or care for her,” Toi explained.
For Javari, graduating alongside his mother was an emotional and proud moment. “Being able to see her walk across the stage right after me is a big achievement. I’ve always looked to her as a role model. She has set big steps for me to follow. It’s a huge accomplishment for both of us,” he said.
The mother and son duo plan to pursue advanced degrees following their graduation, continuing their journey of academic and personal growth.
