AFRICA | A determined mother of one named Inioluwa Afolabi has Master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, through the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
She is set to continue her academic journey at Cambridge after being awarded the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship for her PhD.
Originally from Nigeria, Inioluwa obtained her bachelor’s degree in Pure and Applied Chemistry from Ladoke Akintola University before moving to the United Kingdom for postgraduate studies.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared on Linkedin that studying at Cambridge once seemed impossible. She had been told that full scholarships for international students in the UK were scarce and that Cambridge was a university for the wealthy.
As a mother, she also faced financial challenges and societal expectations, which made the journey even tougher.

However, she refused to settle for casual jobs as a means of survival and instead pursued her passion. During her search for opportunities, she came across an advertisement for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which broke her preconceived notions about the university being out of reach.
Although she met the admission requirements and was accepted at Cambridge, she initially had no funding.
But a breakthrough came when she was awarded the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, making her one of the pioneering recipients of the program at the university.
Through sheer determination, Inioluwa successfully earned her Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Chemistry and, upon completion, secured the Gates Cambridge Scholarship for her PhD, two additional prestigious scholarships, and the 2023 Outstanding Postgraduate Student Cambridge Africa Award,
She also had the honor of speaking at the 25th anniversary of the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors and defended her thesis with no corrections—a rare academic feat.
Inioluwa expressed her gratitude to her husband stating that the achievement would not have been possible without his unwavering support and commitment to ensuring that their marriage never became a barrier to her dreams.
She also thanked her daughter, whose presence reinforced her belief in herself and challenged societal norms that motherhood limits one’s aspirations.
Inioluwa thanked the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship for granting her a life-changing opportunity, and she remains confident that God’s faithfulness will continue to guide her through her PhD and future endeavors
