Existing New Zealand Student Visa Requirements That Still Apply

Not every student visa requirement changed in 2026. You still need to meet the core conditions set by Immigration New Zealand (INZ), including having an approved course, enough funds, acceptable insurance, good health and character, and genuine intentions to study.

Understanding these requirements is important because the new work and post-study options do not replace the basic conditions for getting a student visa.

1. You Need an Offer of Place

Before applying, you generally need an Offer of Place from an approved New Zealand education provider. Your provider must also confirm that your course is appropriate for you and that you meet its academic and, where required, English-language requirements.

2. Meet the New Zealand Student Visa Financial Requirements

You must show that you can support yourself while studying. For tertiary, English-language or other non-compulsory study, INZ currently requires NZD $20,000 per year for courses lasting a year or more, or NZD $1,667 per month for shorter courses. Note that this is separate from your tuition fees.

You can use evidence such as bank statements, scholarships, education loans, fixed-term deposits, sponsorship or a financial undertaking. Your funds must be genuinely available to you while you are in New Zealand.

3. Meet the Tuition Fee Requirement

Also, you must show that you have paid the tuition for one course or one year of study, whichever is shorter, or have an acceptable arrangement to pay it.

If you are applying from outside New Zealand, you can pay your tuition after receiving Approval in Principle (AIP). However, you must provide proof of payment before the visa can be issued.

5. Meet Health and Character Requirements

You must also meet New Zealand’s health and character requirements. Depending on your age, nationality and length of stay, you may need medical examinations, chest X-rays or police certificates.

If you are aged 17 or older and will spend 24 months or more in New Zealand, police certificates are generally required from countries where you are citizens or have spent more than five years since turning 17, subject to INZ’s rules and exceptions.

Since 1 July 2026, INZ requires applicants who need police certificates to submit them with the visa application. A receipt showing that you have applied for the certificate is not accepted as a substitute.

Can International Students Work While Studying in New Zealand?

One of the new visa requirements for Africans to study in New Zealand is the work rights adjustment. From 3 November 2025, you are allowed work up to 25 hours per week during your studies, up from 20 hours. You may also be allowed to work full-time during scheduled holidays, depending on your visa conditions.

The rules cover eligible tertiary and secondary students, as well as some Study Abroad and exchange students, including those on one-semester courses.

However, the 25-hour limit does not apply automatically to every student. Check your eVisa or visa approval letter to confirm your work conditions before accepting a job.If you are already holding a student visa, you may need to apply for a Variation of Conditions to access the additional five hours of work per week.

What Are the New Post-Study Work Options in 2026?

New Zealand is also expanding the pathways available after graduation. From 16 November 2026, eligible graduates who complete an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma and hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas will  qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa.

The Graduate Diploma must be studied full-time in New Zealand for its full duration, and the new route can provide a visa for up to one year.

More broadly, an eligible Post-Study Work Visa will allow you to stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years, depending on your qualification and study history. For degree-level 7 or higher qualifications, you generally need at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand.
