AFRICA | 14-year-old Nigerian boy outshines 40000 contestants to win the 2024 MTN spelling bee competition, gets ₦5million scholarship award.
An exceptional 14-year-old boy, Ikenna Emmanuel Ikechukwu, has emerged as the champion of the 2024 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee, outshining over 40,000 contestants across Nigeria.
Ikenna, a student of Glorious Covenant School, Rivers State in Nigeria, captivated the audience and judges with his impressive performance during the final stage of the competition.
He clinched the victory by correctly spelling the word “Cornucopia” in just six seconds, earning him the title of 2024 mPulse Spelling Bee Champion.

His outstanding achievement comes with remarkable rewards, including a ₦5 million scholarship, a laptop, a smartphone, a mPulse goody bag, and the unique opportunity to serve as the MTN CEO for a Day.
Expressing his gratitude, Ikenna said, “A special thanks to MTN for this amazing platform that helps students learn, play, and shine. This opportunity has been truly life-changing.”
The 2024 competition began with over 40,000 entries, narrowing down to 20 finalists who participated in the physical grand finale. Ikenna’s triumph highlighted his resilience and skill in the face of tough competition.
In recognition of Ikenna’s success, his school, Glorious Covenant School, was awarded an ICT lab equipped with 10 laptops and MTN 5G routers. Additionally, his teacher received ₦500,000 in cash for their role in mentoring the young champion.
The second-place winner, Ayomide Ibigbemi, and the third-place winner, Munachimso Opara, were also celebrated with significant prizes, including scholarships, laptops, and smartphones.
