AFRICA | 15-year-old Nigerian boy scores 99% in SAT exam, hopes for further studies at US university.
A brilliant 15-year-old Nigerian student, David Akoigbe, has achieved an outstanding score in the 2024 Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), placing him in the 99th percentile.
The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States, with high scores often leading to scholarship opportunities abroad.
David, a final-year student of Starfield College in Lagos, Nigeria, scored a near-perfect 1580 out of 1600. He scored a flawless 800/800 in Mathematics and 780/800 in the Reading and Writing section, showcasing his exceptional academic abilities.

In an interview, David shared that he prepared entirely on his own, without the assistance of tutors, coaching classes, or extra lessons. His remarkable score was the result of self-discipline, extensive research, and sheer determination.
David’s father, Stephen Abiodun Akoigbe, confirmed his son’s self-driven approach, expressing immense pride in his accomplishment.
According to Stephen, his role was limited to supporting his son’s applications by handling the payments and double-checking the submission process.
“The interesting part of it all is that he started nursing the dream 2 years ago. He researched, studied on his own, applied on his own, he told me and I asked him to go ahead with it,” Stephen said.
”I came in as his Dad at the point of payment and submission of the application to double-check his application. He studied hard by himself with no tutor and made 1580/1600,” he added.
Stephen continued by saying David’s achievement serves as an inspiration to both teenagers and their parents, emphasizing the importance of self-motivation and strong family support.
“He is an inspiration for teenagers, an inspiration to parents. I’m his Dad, and I’m proud of him,” he said.
Looking ahead, David hopes to continue his education at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He has already submitted his SAT scores, which have been confirmed by the institution. David is optimistic about securing a place at MIT, ideally with a scholarship to help fulfill his aspirations.
