AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Oyefunmilayo Amoda, has achieved outstanding academic success, securing a fully funded PhD scholarship at Oregon State University, United States—without a master’s degree.
In 2022, Amoda graduated from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) with a First-Class Honors degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, achieving an impressive 4.67 cumulative grade point average (CGPA)out of 5.00.
Amoda’s journey to academic excellence began at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Nigeria, where she obtained a National Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics. Determined to advance her education, she gained admission into FUNAAB as a direct-entry student.
Starting with a GPA of 4.18, she remained focused on her goal of excellence. She pushed herself to study harder, discovered new strengths, and ultimately graduated as the best-graduating student in her department.

Despite facing difficulties, including the loss of her father, Amoda was determined to succeed. She expressed deep gratitude to her brother, who sponsored her education, as well as to her lecturers and family members for their unwavering support.
What makes her achievement even more remarkable is that she gained admission directly into a PhD program without a master’s degree, without writing GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS, and without paying an application fee—all based on her outstanding academic record.
Alongside her studies, she will also serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, further enhancing her professional and academic experience.
In addition to her PhD admission, Amoda was awarded the Provost Distinguished Scholarship, a highly competitive award reserved for students with exceptional academic achievements and research potential.
“The application process was complex and demanding, but having the right information and resources made all the difference,” she said, encouraging aspiring scholars to keep trying and never lose hope.
During her PhD, Amoda will focus on studying the epidemiological roles of nutritional factors in cancer development. She is passionate about contributing to global research efforts in nutrition and public health.
”It is time to work harder again and I am ready to give in my best as usual and make positive contributions to the world,” she said.
