AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Sherifat Oshoala has achieved outstanding academic success after earning a Master’s degree in Mass Communication with Distinction from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria.
Her exceptional performance also earned her the Best Graduating Postgraduate Student award in her department. Sherifat’s journey is one defined by excellence, discipline, and consistency.
Sherifat's Story and How She Did It
She began her academic journey at the University of Lagos in 2015, where she studied Mass Communication. Over four years, she maintained an impressive academic record and graduated in 2020 with a First Class degree (4.60 CGPA), emerging as the Best Graduating Student of her set.
Building on that success, Sherifat re-enrolled at UNILAG for her Master’s degree in Mass Communication, where she once again distinguished herself by graduating with Distinction.
Reflecting on her achievement, Sherifat attributed her success to her faith, resilience, and hard work.
“Firstly, Alhamdulillah Robil Alamin! I’m ecstatic. It feels great to be associated with excellence. This is only possible through the help of Allah. I’m grateful that my hard work and resilience were recognised,” she said.
She admitted that enrolling for a Master’s degree was a difficult decision at first, as she questioned her readiness. However, once admitted, she became determined to succeed.
“The programme was intensive and demanding. It wasn’t a walk in the park, but I had my eyes on the goal,” she explained.
Beyond academics, Sherifat has explored diverse professional interests. After her first degree, she worked on grassroots development programmes at the local government level.
Her curiosity about technology also led her into backend software development and IT analysis, while she continued freelancing through her personal media brand, creating engaging digital content.
Despite her growing interest in tech, her passion for media remained strong.
“I’ve been obsessed with the media since childhood. Broadcast journalism has always fascinated me. Choosing Mass Communication again for my Master’s was a no-brainer,” she said.
She described the postgraduate programme as an extension of her undergraduate studies, offering deeper insight and a more refined understanding of the media industry.
Looking ahead, Sherifat plans to focus on professional growth while remaining open to defining her long-term career path over time.
Advising aspiring Mass Communication students, she emphasised the importance of balance and good grades.
“Good grades matter, but they must coexist with life skills, communication, critical thinking, presentation, and networking. These skills will serve you not just professionally, but in everyday life,” she said.
