AFRICA | Young Nigerian Lady builds her GPA from 1.59 in 100 level to 5.00, earns first class degree in Agricultural Science.
A determined Nigerian lady named Ebiomofari Omowumi Janet worked her way up from a grade point average of 1.59 in her first year to achieve a perfect 5.00 grade point average. She earned a first-class degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria.
In a Twitter post, Janet shared her story, revealing how she initially struggled during her first year. Though she was not a poor student, she failed two courses miserably, starting with a 1.3 GPA in her first semester. One of the courses was later upgraded to a “C,” raising her GPA to 1.59.
Janet also faced challenges beyond academics, including financial difficulties and health issues, which led her into depression

However, her poor first-year result served as a wake-up call. “My first-semester result, a 1.3 GPA, shook me out of my sleep, revealing the harsh reality. Fear crept in, and I visited the dark place called depression. I began to live in the shell of inferiority,” she said.
Determined to turn things around, Janet focused on her studies and made a conscious decision to pursue academic excellence.
By her third year, her hard work paid off, and she earned a perfect 5.0 grade point average with straight A’s. She attributed her success to consistent hard work, discipline, determination, and her faith in God.
As a Christian, Janet viewed her academic journey as a spiritual battle, using scripture as her source of strength while also putting in the effort needed to succeed. She maintained her academic excellence throughout, eventually graduating with first-class honors.
Reflecting on her journey, Janet emphasized that failure is not limited to certain individuals—anyone can experience setbacks.
However, success and excellence are also within reach. “Everyone can fail, but that same person can also succeed. It’s just a thin line between these two factors of life,” she said.
Janet encouraged students in similar situations to stay focused on their goals, seek God’s guidance, and remember that they do not have to face their challenges alone. She reminded them to lean on God’s support and guidance along the way.
