After being denied admission to study Medicine, a determined Nigerian lady named Isioma Nwosu emerged as the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2024 academic year.
She earned a first-class degree in Biochemistry with an outstanding cumulative grade point average of 4.93, the highest in the entire university. Her outstanding performance also made her the best graduating student in both her faculty and department.
During her valedictory speech at the convocation ceremony, Isioma shared how her journey to success was shaped by disappointment and resilience.
She recalled feeling devastated when she missed the cut-off mark for Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ibadan by just two points, despite graduating as the valedictorian of her secondary school.

Isioma said the setback forced her to rewrite the UTME, a moment she described as deeply humiliating.
Shelater applied to LASU, still hoping to study Medicine, but she was offered Biochemistry—a course that was strange to her. The second rejection broke her heart again, and she struggled to embrace the new path.
However, with encouragement from some of her lecturers and friends, she gradually found her footing and committed herself fully to her studies. Isioma’s hard work and commitment to her studies paid off as she graduated excellently.
Concluding her speech, Isioma encouraged students to work hard and believe in themselves, no matter what course they are offered. She reminded her fellow graduates that their degree is just the beginning and that they have everything it takes to succeed.
Isioma urged them to hold onto their dreams, surround themselves with the right people, and step into the future with confidence, determination, and a strong sense of purpose.
