AFRICA | A brilliant 20-year-old Nigerian lady, Alaba Ann Danagogo, has achieved outstanding academic success at Syracuse University, New York, emerging as the overall best-graduating student of the 2021 set.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in English and Tertiary studies and graduated with an impressive 3.97/4.00 cumulative grade point average (CGPA).
Her remarkable academic performance also earned her the prestigious 1870 Syracuse University Scholarship, awarded by the university’s Office of Admissions, to study for four years in medical school.
In addition to being valedictorian, Ann was elected as Senior Marshal of the university and recognized as a Distinguished Syracuse University Scholar.

Ann’s academic journey also included an experience as an undergraduate researcher. She performed routine laboratory experiments and analyzed experimental data to support graduate students’ research.
Her independent research focused on Cited2, a transcriptional co-regulator expressed during a crucial phase of neocortical development in the brain.
Through her work, she hopes to contribute to the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders and lay the foundation for potential medical models to address these conditions.
Beyond academics, Ann was involved in clinical and community service. She worked in a hospital as a medical imaging patient care aide and later as a medical and surgical unit patient care aide.
She also volunteered at Ophthalmic Specialist Clinics in Port Harcourt, Nigeria assisting nurses with visual acuity tests.
Her commitment to service extends beyond healthcare. As Event Coordinator for the Food Recovery Network, she raised awareness of food waste on college campuses and helped fund local shelters.
Ann also served as an International Student Mentor in the Connections Program, helping first-year and transfer students adjust to university life. Additionally, she worked as a tutor with the Center for Learning and Student Success, providing academic support to fellow students.
Reflecting on her journey, Ann expressed excitement about her new role as Senior Class Marshal and looks forward to making an impact in the university community in her further studies.
“Being selected as a Senior Class Marshal makes me appreciate just how different my SU story is shaping up from how it started,” Ann said.
“I feel honored and excited to be able to hold this position and communicate with people on important issues that pertain to University life and so much more,” she added.
