AFRICA | A determined Nigerian woman named Omotoke Titilope, has finally won the prestigious United Kingdom (UK) Chevening Scholarship after six years of unsuccessful applications.
The Chevening Scholarship is a highly competitive, fully funded program that allows international students to pursue a master’s degree at any UK university. It covers tuition fees, accommodation, travel, and visa expenses.
Omotoke’s academic journey began in 2014 when she graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University with a bachelor’s degree in Education and Economics. With a passion to further her studies, she set her sights on studying abroad.
In 2018, she applied for the Chevening Scholarship for the first time but faced rejection. Undeterred, she tried again in 2019, 2020, and 2023—each time, receiving another rejection.

However, in 2024, determined to give it one final attempt, Omotoke submitted another application—and this time, she emerged victorious.
She was awarded a fully funded Chevening Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Special Education, Needs, Disabilities, and Inclusion at the University of Hull, UK.
Reflecting on the long and difficult process, Omotoke shared on Linkedin that her Chevening journey was one filled with challenges, self-doubt, and perseverance.
Despite repeated rejections, she remained resilient, reviewing and improving her applications each year until she finally succeeded.

Omotoke expressed gratitude to the Chevening Awards and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for granting her the opportunity to further her studies.
She also acknowledged the supportive people in her life, especially her mentor, who wrote multiple recommendation letters for her, and her husband, whose moral and emotional support kept her going through difficult times.
Omotoke went on to share key strategies that helped her secure the scholarship after multiple attempts including;
Early preparation, since the Chevening application format rarely changes, she began working on her essays before applications even opened which gave her enough time to refine her responses and send them for peer review.
Through research, Omotoke researched the university and course she wanted to study, identifying their unique characteristics and incorporating them into her application.
Finally, mock Interviews, After being shortlisted, Omotoke practiced extensively by doing mock interviews with a friend. This helped her stay confident and well-prepared for the final selection process.
For those currently facing rejection or doubting their chances, Omotoke offered some words of encouragement.
“Do not be discouraged. Rise up, dust yourself off, and put in another quality application. Learn from your mistakes, improve on what didn’t work, and keep pushing forward,” she said.
