“2022, a refugee 🇺🇦. 2024, a licensed Medical Doctor. Look at God,” she wrote, highlighting the remarkable transformation in just two years.
In 2022, Opeyemi was among tens of thousands of refugees, including women and children, who fled to Romania and other neighboring countries as the war in Ukraine escalated. The conflict disrupted her studies, forcing her to take a break.
Despite these challenges, she persevered and successfully completed her medical training in 2024.
Expressing her gratitude, Opeyemi shared on Instagram that her success is by grace and not by mere brainwork or hardwork.
“I am absolutely, absolutely, absolutely nothing without God. This is grace more than whatever form of hard work or brainwork. Thank you, God—Baba mi, ololufe mi, my Creator—for 2024,” she wrote.
In another story, a former African refugee named Mireille Twayigira won a full scholarship to study for a Medicine degree at Shandong University in China.
Mireille was born in Rwanda, but she had to flee the Rwandan genocide when she was at a very young age. In a post by Berkley Center, She said she and her family walked on foot to a refugee camp in Congo, and when war erupted in Congo in 1996 they walked to a new refugee camp in Angola.
After several more years of traveling, losing both her mother and grandmother along the way, she and her grandfather settled in a refugee camp in Malawi. Read more about Mirelle HERE.
