AFRICA | A determined Nigerian lady named Akano Abisola Elizabeth has graduated from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with a First Class degree in Economics Education, earning an outstanding 4.91 CGPA out of 5.00.
Her achievement is particularly remarkable as she made a triumphant academic comeback after dropping out of university due to poor grades. Not only did Abisola graduate with a First Class, but she also emerged as the Best Graduating Student of her department.
Abisola's Story and How She Did It
Abisola began her higher education journey in 2015 after finishing secondary school and gaining admission into Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to study Biochemistry. However, things took an unexpected turn.
“I started failing from my first semester, which was strange because I knew I was a bright student,” she recalled. By the end of her second year, her CGPA had fallen below 1.0, and she was advised to withdraw. She officially dropped out in 2018.
Broken and uncertain about her future, Abisola leaned on the support of her family and decided to try again. In 2019, she rewrote JAMB and gained admission into UNILAG to study Economics Education.
Though unsure of what lay ahead, she entered university with one firm resolve: to never fail again. With determination and faith, she never recorded a failure and never earned below a B in any course.
Beyond graduating with a First Class, Abisola won multiple awards. She emerged as the Best Graduating Student, Department of Economics Education, Best Graduating Student, Social Sciences Education, and Second Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Education.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared on Instagram: “One of the Best Graduating Students in the University of Lagos. God has changed my story, from a dropout to a BGS.”
