AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Cynthia Falegan, has achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning fully funded PhD admissions to two prestigious universities in the United States—despite not having a Master’s degree.
Cynthia graduated in 2017 from Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Nigeria, with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, earning a Second Class Upper grade.
Determined to further her education abroad, she began applying for doctoral programs. Her academic excellence and research background secured her direct PhD admission, bypassing the traditional requirement of a master’s degree before a PhD.
Though she received multiple offers, Cynthia chose to pursue a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo, Ohio, United States.

Cynthia’s admission success comes as no surprise as she maintained excellent academic and professional records at ABUAD.
During her undergraduate studies at ABUAD, she gained valuable industry experience, interning at Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)—two of the largest oil and gas companies in Nigeria.
Explaining her decision to pursue a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Cynthia shared that her passion for sustainable solutions and her research background at ABUAD influenced her choice.
“I decided to pursue my Ph. D studies in the United States because of the research foundation I acquired at ABUAD on Water and Wastewater treatment as well as my love for sustainable solutions in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta Region,” she said.
Despite not having a Master’s degree, she was awarded full funding for her PhD, covering her tuition and living expenses for the five years of study at the university.
