AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Inioluwa John Joshua has graduated from the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria, with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree with distinction.
He was awarded the Overall Best Graduating Student of the College of Medicine, UI. Joshua’s academic journey is marked by excellence, consistency, leadership, and service.
Joshua's Story and How He Did It
Joshua began his medical journey at the University of Ibadan in 2018, stepping in with curiosity and determination.
While his first year felt smooth, the realities of preclinical medical school quickly set in, with long hours, dense textbooks, and an intense workload. Still, he adapted, pushed through, and excelled.
He recorded a Distinction in Anatomy in his first MB examinations and maintained outstanding performance throughout medical school.
By the end of his training, Joshua had earned multiple academic honors, including valedictorian of his graduating set, best Student in MB I, MB II, and MB IV Examinations, best Student in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Surgery, and Preventive & Social Medicine
Joshua was also awarded the Second Best Student in Medicine and the Provost’s Award for Excellent Participation in Community Life
Beyond academics, Joshua stood out as a student leader. He served as UIMSA Senate Chairman and later UIMSA President, represented UI in local and international medical students’ quizzes, and won at least nine quiz competitions.
He also served as President of the UIMSA Royal Quiz Club. Joshua’s passion for research and impact led him to co-author five research publications and place in the top three of over ten local and international essay contests.
He co-founded Project Better Life, an initiative focused on breast cancer awareness and screening. He also volunteered with several organizations, including JCIN UCH, Asido Campus Network UI, and Enactus UI.
Reflecting on his journey on LinkedIn, Joshua described it as demanding but deeply rewarding, noting how each phase stretched him and strengthened his resolve. He expressed gratitude to God, his family, friends, and mentors for their unwavering support.
Looking ahead, Joshua said he is open to opportunities as he works toward a career as a clinician-scientist, particularly in emergency-related disciplines.
