AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Uthman Anofowose Rasaq has achieved an exceptional academic feat after earning a Master’s degree in Computational Mathematics from Western Kentucky University (WKU) in the United States.
He graduated with distinction and received three prestigious awards in recognition of his outstanding performance.
Uthman began his academic journey at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics with First Class Honours in 2020.
After his undergraduate studies, he moved to the United States to pursue further education at Western Kentucky University.

In 2024, he graduated with remarkable results. His academic excellence earned him three major awards.
He was named the recipient of the 2024–2025 John D. Minton Graduate Student Award, the highest graduate honor at WKU, given to only one student each year for academic excellence, leadership, research, and service.
He also received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award, recognizing his exceptional scholarly performance, and the Department of Mathematics Outstanding Student Award, for his academic contribution and service within the department.
Reflecting on his journey in a Facebook post, Uthman shared how far he had come. Growing up, he was named Best Student in Mathematics in high school, a moment that sparked his love for problem-solving and analytical thinking.
This passion led him to study mathematics at the university level, where he also served as Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Mathematical Sciences Students (NAMSSN), LAUTECH Chapter.
Uthman explained that these early experiences shaped his discipline and leadership skills. During his Master’s program, he conducted research focused on developing mathematical models to improve the stability and control mechanisms of advanced materials used in engineering and technology.
He said his work contributes to building a more innovative future. Beyond research, Uthman also excelled in teaching.
He independently taught College Algebra as a Supplemental Graduate Assistant and stood out for his teaching effectiveness, becoming the only graduate student to introduce a Plus-Delta survey to evaluate and improve his instructional methods.
Speaking about the awards, Uthman said they are not just achievements but reminders of the journey of the seeds planted through hard work, mentorship, and a love for learning. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his parents, siblings, and the people of Saki town for their unwavering support.
“As the saying goes, ‘My heart is over the moon,’ and indeed, that perfectly captures how thrilled and grateful I am to have been selected for the Minton Award,” he said.
He also acknowledged his advisor at WKU, Dr. Özer whose mentorship he described as a key part of his success. Uthman gave credit to the mathematics department at LAUTECH for providing the strong academic foundation that prepared him for this journey.
Uthman is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Clemson University. He hopes to one day become a university lecturer, where he can continue his research and mentor future scholars.
