AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man bags masters degree with distinctions at UK university, celebrates achievement.
A brilliant Nigerian lady named Oluwatobi Oni has achieved an outstanding milestone by earning a Master’s degree in Public Health with Data Science Specialism with distinction from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.
Celebrating his achievement on LinkedIn, Oluwatobi described his academic journey as one filled with growth, challenges, and remarkable accomplishments that he is proud to share.
During his program, Oluwatobi consistently achieved A grades across most of his courses. He highlighted some significant achievements, including receiving an A1 grade (the highest attainable grade in the University of Glasgow’s 22-point system) for his critical analysis essay on using safe injecting facilities to address drug-related deaths in Scotland.

Oluwatobi said he also excelled with an A grade in “Managing Healthcare Organisations,” an optional course at the Adam Smith Business School. This course introduced him to strategic and managerial skills beyond his medical background.
He also designned a longitudinal study using UK Biobank data to explore how the APOE ε4 genetic factor influences dementia risk over time, for which he also earned an A grade.
Oluwatobi expressed pride in these academic milestones, noting their importance in his professional journey. Beyond his academic achievements, he actively contributed to his university community and beyond.
His notable extracurricular accomplishments include serving as Secretary of the Nigerian Students Society, helping Nigerian students settle and thrive academically while fostering a supportive community.
He represented postgraduate students on the School of Health and Wellbeing’s Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team, advocating for diversity and inclusion and collaborated to diversify the curriculum for Public Health and Global Mental Health courses by incorporating materials now studied by new students.
Oluwatobi also contributed to PhD-led research that resulted in a published paper and presenting his work at the University of Glasgow’s Computational Biology Conference and the Wellcome Trust Building in London.
He co-founded a team of social entrepreneurs addressing UN SDG3 challenges and presenting their project on a fully sponsored trip to Mexico and participated in the HDR UK Class of 2024 internship, where he led a team of six data scientists in a technical challenge, securing a top-three placement among 10 groups.
Oluwatobi emphasized that his journey has equipped him with valuable skills, including real-world data analysis, big data handling, statistical programming, longitudinal study design, leadership, and critical thinking.
