A brilliant Nigerian lady named Joshua Okoduwa has defied the odds of poverty to earn a Master’s degree in Poverty and Development from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom.
Joshua’s higher academic journey began at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Planning. Determined to advance his education, he began applying to universities abroad.
His dedication and perseverance paid off when he was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, enabling him to study in the United Kingdom and achieve his master’s degree.
Reflecting on his journey, Joshua shared a heartfelt story about his humble beginnings in Agege, Lagos, where poverty was a daily reality for them.

”I am from the hood, Where teenage pregnancy and drug abuse were the order of the day,
I am from the hood where cultism thrived from dusk to dawn, I am from the hood where I lived in a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ housing situation, with smoky and dark kitchens to sometimes cooking in the passageways,” he said.
Despite the hardships, Joshua found a way to rise above his circumstances. He recalled moments of struggle, including attending random weddings just for a meal and setting rat traps to protect important documents.
Rather than let his background define him, Joshua chose to give back. From the same hood that shaped him, he founded Restructure Africa, an initiative dedicated to empowering underprivileged youth.
”I started Restructure Africa from the hood; my situation was as bad as the people we were reaching out to, but I believed in getting them ahead, and I am super grateful to God for the successes,” he said.
Now, with a master’s degree in Poverty and Development, Joshua is on a mission to uplift young people from similar backgrounds by expanding their opportunities and helping them compete globally.
”Today, I hope to remind every child from the streets and slums, anyone who runs from their backgrounds and upbringing, that their dreams are valid. It does get better,” he said.
Joshua attributes his success to God, perseverance, and the people who supported him. He expressed deep gratitude to the Chevening Awards, the University of Sussex, and the Institute of Development Studies for helping him build the capacity to create meaningful change.
”We may never look like what we have been through, but it is a reality that we may never recover from,” he said.
