AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Damilola Olawuyi Akinola has emerged as the best graduating medical student of Bowen University’s 2020 set after earning his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) with six distinctions.
His outstanding performance earned him a total of nine awards, and he was officially inducted into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
Sharing his excitement on Twitter, Damilola said he was grateful that his dream of becoming a medical doctor happened at just the right time—not too early, not too late—and for that, he was truly thankful.
Reflecting on the journey, he credited Bowen University for providing him with a well-rounded experience as a student. He explained that the institution exposed him to highly professional lecturers who maintained high academic standards and helped shape his path.

Talking about how students can achieve academic success, Damilola encouraged others to first aim for consistency rather than perfection. He advised students to focus on passing well while balancing academics with other parts of life, such as entrepreneurship, student politics, and personal growth.
But for those who hope to graduate as the best, he emphasized the importance of spiritual guidance, collaboration, and intense dedication.
He encouraged students to seek God’s direction, learn from their seniors, work hard, and support their peers, while still maintaining a well-rounded life.
After graduating, Damilola achieved yet another milestone. In February 2025, he earned a postgraduate diploma in Internal Medicine and was awarded membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom—a globally recognized qualification in the medical field.
Damilola expressed gratitude to God for His favor and to all the people who supported him throughout his journey. Looking ahead, he remains committed to making a lasting impact in the world of medicine.
