AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Joseph Peter Akpan has emerged as the overall best-graduating student of the College of Medicine, University of Uyo, Nigeria, after earning an outstanding 10 distinctions out of the 11 courses he studied.
Additionally, he was inducted into the Medical and Dental Profession of Nigeria, receiving his license to practice as a medical doctor in the country.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post, Joseph said his achievements set new records at the university. He became the first student to earn three distinctions in the 1st Professional MBBS Exams.
He also made history as one of the first doctors to ever achieve a distinction in Family Medicine, and the first doctor to earn four distinctions in the Final MBBS Exams, earning him multiple awards and plaques.

Reflecting on his journey, Joseph said in an interview that he almost gave up but is grateful he persevered.
“I’m surprised because when I registered for medicine somewhere along the line, I had a cause to call my mother and told her I’m withdrawing. She threatened to disown me if I should do such a thing. But today I am happy because the result has come out this way,” he said.
He also acknowledged the impact of his study group, stating that three of the seven students who earned distinctions were part of his group.
Despite facing financial struggles, personal losses, and academic pressure, Joseph remained determined. He relied on his faith and the support of his friends and loved ones to push through difficult times.
In another story, a brilliant Nigerian man named Toroabasi Etim has shattered a 30-year-old record at the University of Uyo, Nigeria, by graduating with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He achieved a remarkable cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.82—the highest in the university’s history since its inception.
Etim’s outstanding academic performance also earned him the prestigious title of overall best-graduating student of the Class of 2024.
